UMT Empowers Emergency Boat System Skills of Ranaco Diploma Students Through SULAM Program

KEMAMAN – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), through the Faculty of Ocean Engineering Technology (FTKK), continues to expand its efforts in transferring knowledge and academic expertise to the community by organizing a Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) project titled “Pemerkasaan Kemahiran Sistem Bot Kecemasan” (Empowerment of Emergency Boat System Skills).

The two-day program, held on June 3–4, took place at the Ranaco Education and Training Institute in Kemaman, Terengganu. It involved the participation of 23 third-year Diploma in Offshore Engineering students from the institute and was conducted by 13 students from the MMT4233 (Ship Power Plant and Equipment) course under FTKK, UMT.

The project was led by Ts. Sheikh Alif bin Ali and funded by the Center for Knowledge Transfer, Industry and Community Network (PPIJIM), UMT. The program was also supported by university officers and facilitators, namely Dr. Sayyid Zainal Abidin bin Syed Ahmad, Dr. Mohd Afifi bin Jusoh, Ts. Dr. Mohd Azlan bin Musa, and Ts. Dr. Che Wan Mohd Noor.

According to Sheikh Alif, the organization of this SULAM program aims to provide structured exposure and training to Ranaco students in understanding marine valve systems and emergency boat operations, in line with current offshore industry requirements.

“This initiative serves as an excellent platform for UMT students to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills from the MMT4233 course in real-world situations. At the same time, it sharpens university students’ leadership, communication, and social responsibility skills through learning-based community service activities,” he said.
