UMT SULAM Programme Empowers Pupils Through AI and Robotics

The “Empowering STEM: AI Applications in Robotics” SULAM programme was implemented from March 22 to June 23, 2026, by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) through the EDI3063 Sensor and Transducer course. The programme involved 48 UMT students, 11 lecturers and staff members, 48 primary school pupils and 12 teachers from 11 schools in Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Nerus.

The programme aimed to introduce pupils to basic STEM, sensor, transducer, artificial intelligence and robotics concepts through hands-on learning. Participants were guided to assemble and test ZOOM:BIT robots using micro:bit, Microsoft MakeCode, DC motors, LEDs, buzzers, line and ultrasonic sensors, and the HuskyLens AI camera. Through small-group activities, pupils learned how input, processing and output elements work together in a robotic system.

Several activities were carried out, including module preparation, robot development, programming, sensor calibration, AI camera testing and robotic challenges. Knowledge transfer sessions were held at UMT on May 16, 2026, and at SK Rengas Bekah on June 20, 2026. The programme concluded with the SULAM x Nurturing Young Talent robotics competition at Dewan Sultan Mizan, UMT, on June 23, 2026.

The programme produced functional robots, illustrated modules, MakeCode materials, reports, videos and photographs for future school use. Feedback showed positive impact, with pupils reporting better understanding after the programme and strong agreement that the activities were helpful.
