We aim to enhance the ability of our researchers in fields relevant to FTKK to manage, implement and produce research outputs which include the preparation of the grant proposals and academic writings. The Materials and Corrosion RIG also provides the medium for researchers to collaborate across disciplines with other faculty (especially FSSM) and research institutes, industries as well as with oversea researchers around the world through conferences, grant collaboration, publications as well as joint student supervision.
The focus of this RIG is based on environmental friendly themes which are natural resources. In addition, the ultimate goal of this RIG is to create a research hub that equipped with up-to-date research instruments and technology where competent and innovative researchers can be produced and attract more partners/collaborators locally and internationally. We believe the existence of this RIG will provide a platform for researchers in materials and corrosion to share their expertise, services and consultation to the society.

Synopsis
Syngas is short for synthesis gas, which is a mixture consisting of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. The production of syngas from plastic is seen to have high commercial potential in Malaysia which can then be processed and converted into diesel fuel.
This syngas production system uses continuous liquefaction technology that indirectly heats plastic waste, and the reaction becomes a unique catalyst to produce hydrocarbon gas which is then cooled and condensed to produce ASTM specification diesel fuel and other fuel blends.
This fuel not only meets the standards, but also can be used in any diesel engine, truck, bus, train, ship, heavy machinery and generator without engine modification.
The objectives of the establishment of RIG are:
- Intensify research in the field of syngas to achieve world-class research.
- Produce high-impact publications and produce products that can be patented and subsequently commercialized.
- Establish national and international relations in the field related to syngas.
